The bottom line is that if your concrete surface isn’t intact, the concrete beneath it is at risk. The issue is the “near surface wear zone.” It’s the very top surface of your concrete, down to a depth of 1/8 inch, where abrasion happens. Here, concrete is made up of cement paste and very fine aggregate. Without some kind of treatment, the paste and aggregate of the near surface wear zone will wear away fairly quickly.
Once concrete has been placed, a chemical hardener/densifier can be very helpful in keeping the near surface wear zone intact by densifying the cement paste to hold the aggregate better. As a result of this process, the floor actually gains shine as it gains abrasion resistance and seals the floor. It’s one option to consider in contrast to a more expensive and high VOC (volatile organic compound) urethane installation.
